In the Disney cartoon (narrated by Sterling Holloway) the duck (named Sonya) ends up in the hollow of a tree. The wolf MISSED. The wolf is captured, not shot.

By the way, in Prokofiev's original concept, Peter is not simply a kiddo, but one of a communist youth group (like Soviet boy scouts). This is why he is portrayed as fearless. Grandpapa may refer to an example of cautious czarist thinking, antipathetic to the "new young breed". This may seem shocking, but it is in keeping with "socialist realism" under whose thumb Prokofiev was at the time. In addition, if you have heard Prokofiev's children's suite, Winter Holiday, it deals with the same communist youth group.

This may disturb the simple fairy tale aspect of P+W, but it does not change a note of the music. Keep on loving or hating it as if you had not read this.

One of the best tests for Peter and the Wolf is whether a kid will listen to it. I "dug out" my old London Symphony tape and played it in the car while my 5 year old was in a "whiney" mood. He became quiet, to my surprise. The next morning, as I was headed for work, he asked me for the tape because he wanted to hear the story again.

I asked him what he liked about it. It was the instrumental portrayal of the characters that he focused on; he couldn't quite remember the actual storyline. Maybe he will the next time he listens to it.

Are there different folk versions of Peter and the Wolf. Could you have a "Pedro y El Lobo" and use instruments from Latin America and Spain? And so forth for other cultures........

You cracked me up there, because when I saw the title of this thread I translated it in my head to "Pedro y el lobo". Then I saw that your post did just that!!

Well I've heard "Peter Vehaze'ev" no end of times - I even recorded my son reciting it at the age of 3.

Hey, Piqa Twisting, I was looking for the opposite of "sympathetic", and thought it would be "antipathetic". We can look up the right word. I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

The Disney cartoon starts with the transliterated title "Petya y Volk". Just thought I'd toss that in.

The Red Army comes to help Comrad Peter, a man of the people, from the greedy capitalist wolf. Gramps still loves the Romanoffs. The duck is not much of a worker. The bird is clever and talented. As for the cat, it has been too many years since last I heard the Late Leonard Bernstein perform this classic piece.
Any other ideas?
