What timing considering he died today. His kids are 7 and 5. Perhaps this is harsh, but I find it kinda selfish that he had these kids so late in life and now they are without Dad at these ages. I think about these things as I am approaching 40 and considering having more kids. At least I can hope for 30-some good years if the Lord blesses me with an average life span.

New data, fresh out [from mice, naturlich]:
its more probable your female gametes are being freshly created thru-out your fertile life. That makes the whole increased trisomy occurence with maternal age thing make much more sense.

Eggs that were properly created would find it challenging to then replicate a single chromosome as would be needed to create a trisomy embryo.
But, older cells going thru meiosis may be more susceptible to uneven chromosome division leading to gametes with 2 copies of a given chromosome and other gametes with no copies of that chromosome. Presumably unisomy embryos are non-viable, so miscarried very quickly after fertilization.

I'm so far off my plan its laughable, and life is as good as its ever been. Plans are nice and they are fun to laugh at in hind sight!

Once upon my childhood, I had plans of how life would be when I grew up. It took me a lot longer to grow up than planned, and other deviations along the way resulted in most of my life having no resemblance to those plans in anyway.

Hmmm...where did you get this info? :confused: Every article I found from journals all say that gametes basically stop being made (by mitosis from other oogonia) around the 5th month (+/- a few weeks) in utero where the number is about 6 million oocytes (eggs). By birth, the number is about 2-3 million oocytes that are arrested in prophase of Meiosis I (cell division without chromosome replication). At puberty, this is further decreased and throughout the female reproductive lifespan, for every oocyte that is released, a bunch more have died off. However, follicular development does occur during this time. Follicular development and oocyte production are not synonymous. The follicule is entire structure that the oocyte is within.

Since oocytes no longer replicate chromosomes after 5 months in utero, not only would replicating chromosomes to create a trisomy embryo be challenging but basically impossible. The older cell bit of info does agree with everything I've read or been taught by various profs and is one reason why trisomies increase with advanced maternal age. And the only unisomy that is viable is Turner Syndrome (monosomy of the X chromosome).

Sorry, I know you didn't ask for any boring comment about it but what you found just didn't sound right. Please let me know where you read that cause I'd be curious to read it and maybe ask some of my profs about it.

just found the Nature article piq was talking about. Still not so sure...of course, the only true way of knowing if this applies to us is to convince a bunch of women to do a crapload of genetic manipulation (they used transgenic mice) and inject a bunch of chemicals and then mate these women and examine their girl babies. Any volunteers? I'll ask one of the reproductive endocrinologists what he thinks since I'm now curious...as if I didn't have other curiousities to follow up on let alone learning about growth and development.
